Hot Rod: Everything We Know About Plot | Cast & Sequel

Hot Rod is indeed a 2007 American comedydrama film written by Pam Brady and directed by Akiva Schaffer (in his directorial debut). Andy Samberg plays Rod Kimble, an amateur stuntman whose stepfather Frank (Ian McShane) constantly mocks and disrespects him. When Frank grows unwell, Rod pulls out his biggest prank yet to raise money for his heart surgery. Jorma Taccone, Sissy Spacek, Will Arnett, Danny McBride, Isla Fisher, and Bill Hader all-star in the film.

Pam Brady (who retains full writing credit) originally wrote the script as a vehicle for Saturday Night Live star Will Ferrell, however the project never got off the ground. Lorne Michaels persuaded Paramount to allow The Lonely Island, which was earning acclaim for its work on Saturday Night Live, to take over the project. Following that, the crew rewrote the film with a significant emphasis on odd surreal humour. In the summer of 2006, it was shot in Vancouver. Former Yes guitarist Trevor Rabin composed the score, and the soundtrack includes numerous songs by the Swedish rock group Europe.

Hot Rod was released on August 3, 2007 by Paramount Pictures. On a $25 million budget, it was a box office flop, collecting only $14 million. It garnered mixed reviews, as expected, with critics criticising the film’s narrative and humour. On home video, it has become a cult classic.

Hot Rod obtains the Matrix of Leadership from Optimus Prime in the original animated film, which turns him into Rodimus Prime, the new leader of the Autobots. The Matrix of Leadership was first presented in the live-action films in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Since the Matrix did not appear in Transformers 4, it is likely that Optimus Prime still retains it after using it to resuscitate Sentinel Prime in Transformers 3, who in turn told Optimus to keep it.

Transformers: The Last Knight will be released in theatres in the United States on June 23, 2017, with the Bumblebee spin-off following on June 8, 2018, and Transformers 6 following on June 28, 2019.

Plot of The Hot Rod:

Rod Kimble has always believed that his late father was a great and reputable stuntman who worked with Evel Knievel. His ambition is to follow in his dad’s footsteps and become a well-known stuntman. Frank, Rod’s stepfather, does not accept him as a man, regularly beating him in sparring sessions and insulting his stuntman ambitions. Rod makes numerous tries to land jumps on his Tomos moped, the majority of which are unsuccessful. He goes home after another failed jump attempt at a public pool to learn that Frank need a heart transplant, which the family’s healthcare insurance will not cover. Rod, enraged at the prospect of his stepfather passing without having the opportunity to earn his respect and lose at least one fight to him, flees into the woods to vent his rage and tumbles down a steep hill. He gets an idea when he sees an encouraging billboard at the bottom of the hill. Rod rushes over to his squad (his childhood buddies Rico and Dave, as well as his half-brother Kevin) and informs them that he intends to leap over 15 school buses and use the money to pay for Frank’s surgery. Denise, his next-door neighbour and love interest, joins his crew as well.

Rod, who “likes to party,” works festivals, corporate get-togethers, and other gatherings to advertise his stunt and raise funds, including tying pillows to his body and having a washing machine hanging by a crane swing hit him. When he hears music coming from Kevin’s computer while doing laundry without his trousers on, he becomes intrigued about what he is editing. Rod asks Kevin to show him the video he was fiddling around with. Kevin claims he was messing around with editing footage. Rod is pleased by Kevin’s work and comes up with the idea to fundraise by releasing a stuntman film. Kevin distributes the video based on his stunt footage and sells over 200 tickets to the showing, but the audience mocks Rod as the film displays his poor training attempts. Rod becomes enraged and throws the projector from the theatre through a window, crushing the projectionist’s car below. To escape arrest, he gives the projectionist all of the money he has raised to cover the damage.

He comes home, upset, to find out that his biological father was not the stuntman he had assumed. Despite his friends’ protests, Rod quits the crew and puts an end to his goal of beating up Frank. But he jumps again when Dave asks Rod to drive him to the hospital for an injury he sustained while “trippin’ balls” on LSD his friend Derek gave him. When he does, Dave counsels him, prompting Rod to apologise to Kevin. While accepting his apology, Kevin discloses that Rod’s stunt tape has gone viral on the internet. A show presented by Barry Pasternak on a local AM radio station offers to cover the costs of the planned jump.
