Kanpur Medical College Principal Dr. Arati Lalchandani transferred after Islamophobic remarks

Kanpur: Uttar Pradesh government has removed Dr. Arati Dave Lalchandani, Principal of Kanpur’s GSVM Medical College from her post after she used controversial Islamophobic remarks against Muslims in a video that went viral last week.

In the video Lalchandani was heard calling the Tablighi Jamaat members as terrorists who deserve to be put in jail. She also accused Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of indulging in Muslim appeasement and exhausting resources on them.

The action was taken after Kanpur District Magistrate Brahm Dev Tiwari submitted his report on the controversy to Principal Secretary (Medical Education) Rajneesh Dube. “Lalchandani has been transferred to Jhansi where she will serve as principal of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College Medical College,” The Indian Express reported.

Dr. R B Kamal is most likely to replace her. Though, there is no official confirmation yet. Dr. Lalchandani, whose tenure will end in September this year, has refused to go to Jhansi. Earlier she was transferred to Banda and Kannauj Medical Colleges but she did not join.

Following the controversy, Lalchandani alleged that the video was morphed by a local journalist in Kanpur who has been allegedly trying to use it to extort money and receive administrative favours and she will register complaint against the journalist. However, no FIR has been registered till date.

After the controversy broke out, Lalchandani had released a video statement saying that she has “special love” for the minority community and had taught many Muslims students. She had also released a letter apologising for “hurting the feelings of Muslim brothers and sisters”.
