UAE develops promising breakthrough Coronavirus treatment, Patent registered

Abu Dhabi: A UAE research institute has developed a breakthrough treatment for coronavirus infection using stem cells “which could be a game-changer in the global fight” against the global pandemic, a government official announced on Friday.

The treatment was developed by a team of doctors and researchers at the Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Center, ADSCC, and involves extracting stem cells from the patient’s own blood and reintroducing them into the lungs via inhalation of a mist. Ministry of Economy granted the patent for the innovative method in which the stem cells are collected.

The therapeutic effect is based on the hypothesis of regenerating lung cells and modulating the immune response to keep it from overreacting to the COVID-19 infection and causing further damage to healthy cells.

The treatment has successfully undergone an initial phase of clinical trials with 73 patients making full recoveries. None of the patients who have received the treatment reported immediate adverse effects and there have been no interactions found with the conventional treatment protocols for COVID-19 patients.

The recipients were moderately or severely ill before treatment, with many intubated in an ICU.  More trials are being conducted to have a clearer understanding of the treatment’s potential in the coming weeks.

It is worth mentioning that the treatment has been given to patients along with the conventional medical intervention and will continue to be applied as a supplement to established treatment protocols rather than as a replacement.

The Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center is a specialist healthcare center that focuses on cell therapy, regenerative medicine and cutting-edge research on stem cells.
