Pune: Thousands of Muslim women, mostly clad in hijab, on Saturday stepped out of their houses here in Pune to join a silent protest march against the Centre’s Triple Talaq Bill passed in the Lok Sabha last year.
The rally led by AIMPLB’s member Asma Zahra began at 5pm from Jama Masjid on MG Road and culminated at Azam campus after the speech of Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi. Women holding placards, with varied slogans written, “We Reject Triple Talaq Bill”, “Government may change but not Sharia” etc. demanded that Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill, 2017 be withdrawn.
The protest march was organised under the umbrella of Kul Jamati Tanzeem (All Party Federation) of Muslim outfits with guidance from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB). A list of demands in the form of memorandum is handed over to the district collector.
“Mr. Modi please open your mind as well as eyes, you have no sympathy towards Muslim women. You are an enemy and doing injustice to us but will our PM listen?” questioned AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, reported ANI.
Owaisi further lauding the women participants said that now young and old alike has to stand for Sharia. He also took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi challenging if PM can declare Mallya, Modi, Choksi, Mehta and Parekh as financial terrorists.
The MG road was cleared for the protest. “As per our estimate more than 5000 women participated in the silent rally. Not a single untoward incident was reported. We had deployed mostly women police personnel”, said Ravindra Rasal, Assistant Commissioner of Police Special Branch.
Before the arrival of women rally at Azam Campus, there were announcements made on the loudspeaker against PA Inamdar, accusing him of not being cooperative though announcer accepted that organizers were not prepared for such large gathering. Inamdar is president of M.C.E. Society which runs the Azam camps, a prestigious minority institute in Pune.
Sayed Maimoona, a Lecturer said, “Under the proposed bill, if someone gives triple talaq to his wife, then he will get three years of imprisonment. If husband will be sent to jail for three years, who will take care of his wife, sisters, mother and children who are dependent on him? Triple talaq bill is interference in Sharia and once enacted, will be beginning of state’s interference in personal laws”.
Another protesting woman said, “We demand no changes should be made to Muslim Personal Law. The law made by Allah is sufficient for us. There nothing such as triple talaq, people have misunderstood it.”
The march was part of a series of silent marches by AIMPLB against triple talaq bill which are being organised in different parts the country.
