Solapur gets rehabilitation center for Urdu medium school drop outs

Solapur (Maharashtra): In an attempt to curb  drop out rate  of Urdu medium students, Solapur city based NGO khadiman Urdu Forum has started rehabilitation center for  boys and girls to continue their studies under National open schooling.

Inaugural function of Shaheed Qurban Husain rehabilitation center was held on Sunday at Naeem Shaikh Cultural center. Mayor of the city Shobha Tai Banshetty was the chief guest and Dr. A. Qadir (Secretary Shahin Education society, Bidar) presided over the function. Ex-Mayor Arif Shaikh, city corporators Mrs. Waheda Bhandale, Riyaz Kharadi, Rafiq Hatture and prominents like Mukhtar Humnabadi were the other guests.

It has already been revealed by justice Sachar Committee in 2006 that drop out rate among Muslims is higher. According to this  report “one-fourth of Muslim children aged between 6-14 have either never attended school or are dropouts”.

President of the Urdu Forum Viqar Shaikh spoke to theShahab.com and said, As per Mahamuddur Rahman Committee Report drop out rate among Muslims is nearly 53% in Maharashtra state. It clearly means that 100 students get admitted to std -I and only 47 appear for std-X SSC board exam. Considering these shocking figures we have decided to work for those students and provide opportunity to pass at least Secondary School Certificate (SSC) which has now been made  mandatory by Govt. to get driving license, Visa and Jobs etc.

Viqar says, there are four reasons of increased drop out rate i) Poverty ii) Girls’ early marriage iii) Inclination towards business iv) Detaining students in Std IX for better X std. result. We are working since last one year to implement  this National Open schooling scheme. Alhamdullilah (By the grace of Allah) now we have got nearly 90 admissions and we are starting weekend class from 15 August, Viqar added further.

Criteria for joining this school is, a candidate should have basic reading, writing skills  and minimum age of 14 years. It is very disheartening and discouraging  that apart from poverty and other reasons our Urdu school Authorities are also responsible for increasing drop out rates. School Head Masters, teachers carry responsibility of increasing education  rate but in this scenario they are also emerging as culprit number 4.

Khadimam  Urdu Forum’s office bearers Dr. Shafi Chobdar, Mahmud Nawaz, Nazeer Munshi, Ayyub Nallamandu and Rafique khan etc. are sincerely working  to run this open school smoothly and successfully.

Head Master A.M Aleem (Rtd.) lauded this initiative and said that it will surely help to increase Literacy rate. He said that during my tenure we found that most of students of std V are unable to read Urdu and some of them can’t even write their names. Rtd. Head Master of SSA Urdu High school further said, This negligence is also the reason for increased  drop out rate because weakness in basic skills gets students closer to inferiority complex and finally many of them leave school. We should promote remedial teaching to improve basic skills and bring positive change in Muslim educational status, added Aleem.
