Solapur: Indian National Congress candidate Haji Toufiq Hatture has managed to retain the Block No. 14 seat by a margin of 1700 votes in Municipal by poll which was scheduled on Friday, 6 April. AIMIM candidate Peer Ahmed Shaikh stood second by grabbing 3250 votes.
The result was declared on Saturday morning at around 11.30 am. The seat was lying vacant since January 2018 due to sad demise of sitting councillor Rafique Hatture.
Haji Toufiq is youngest brother of veteran Congress leader late Rafiq Hatture who had registered five consecutive wins from the same ward and worked for common man on priority. His way of working had made him popular among masses.
Apart from BJP, Shiv Sena, CPM candidates’ total four Muslim candidates Peer Ahmed Shaikh (AIMIM) Saddam Shabdi (National Congress Party) Mukri Salar (Independent) were in the fray.
A Muslim dominant block with nearly 19000 Muslims out of 30000 voters had a tough fight. AIl India Majlis Ittihadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) candidate’s presence made the contest unpredictable. AIMIM already has 10 councillor elected in Municipal Corporation and the city is known as a stronghold of the party.
The election has become issue of hot discussion among the social circle. Some social workers expressed their concern over the result as four Muslim candidates were contesting with each other.
Speaking with Theshahab.com, winning candidate Haji Toufiq Hatture gave the credit to all the voters and his volunteers for putting their whole hearted efforts. He further said that the win was not easy but Almighty has given the success. I will follow the foot step of my late brother and tried to work for all without considering their cast and creed, Added Toufiq.
Solapur Central MLA Praniti Shinde congratulated Haji Toufiq and expressed happiness over the thumping win. She says, it is a win of a secular force, we must give credit to all the voters. We have defeated communal forces like AIMIM and BJP, she added.
