Shoe thrown at AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi in Mumbai rally

Mumbai: A shoe was thrown at the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi while he was addressing a rally on Tuesday at Nagpada in south Mumbai, the MP however remained unhurt.

The incident took place around 9:45 pm during Owaisi’s speech against the triple talaq bill. The man who had thrown the shoe was taken into custody and a case has been registered by the police.

Owaisi, unfazed with the incident did not stop his speech. He said, “I am willing to lay down my life for my democratic rights. These are all frustrated people who cannot see the government decision on triple talaq has not been accepted by masses in general and Muslims in particular.”

Owaisi further said that such incidents were happening at the behest of people, who follow “hate ideologies” and that they are getting emboldened with each passing day. “These are the same people who killed Gandhi, Dabholkar and Pansare,” he added.

The MP from Hyderabad has been holding multiple meetings as a part of the Tahafuz-e-Shariat (preservation of the Shariati) campaign across various parts of the country to protest against the bill.

“The triple talaq bill is a conspiracy against the Muslim community. It is a tactic to bring out the women of the community on roads and send the men to prison,” the AIMIM leader said.

At the same time, he asked the Muslim community to socially boycott those who take the instant triple talaq route to divorce. He suggested that the Modi government allocate Rs 2,000 crore for rehabilitation of women divorced under triple talaq.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone-III, Virendra Mishra said the police were going through the CCTV footage and probing the matter and has not divulged the identity of the shoe-thrower.
