Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, Ameer (leader) of Indian Tablighi Jamaat has finally returned to India today without attending the Bishwa Ijtema after the stern opposition from a faction of Tablighi Jamaat.
He left Dhaka on Saturday at 11:45 am by a Jet Airways flight, Tablighi Jamaat sources at Bangladesh said.
Khandhalvi arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday to attend the Bishwa Ijtema. A faction of the Tablighi Jamaat staged a demonstration near Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka in protest against the arrival of Khandhalvi from India, creating huge traffic congestion at the Airport Road.
Maulana Saad was later escorted to Kakrail Mosque, the place where he stayed till his return.
Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal held a meeting with the Tabligh Jamaat faction which has been at odds over the Khandhalvi’s presence in the country for Ijtema, after two-hour long meeting both sides agreed that the Khandhalvi would stay at Kakrail Mosque during the Ijtema being held in Tongi.
The protesters said Tabligh Jamaat members in India and Bangladesh have been opposing the visit of Maulana Saad as Darul Uloom Deoband, the movement’s central seminary, has been maintaining a state of non-cooperation with him.
Darul Uloom Deoband issued a fatwa (decree) against Kandhalvi in December 2016, accusing him of “misinterpreting Islamic Sharia and insulting prophets and messengers of the Almighty.”
The Tablighi Jamaat, a worldwide Islamic movement have been divided into two factions after Maulana Saad has laid a claim to the leadership.
Since the passing away of Maulana Inaam ul Hassan popularly known as Hazrat ji, a shura was appointed instead of one Ameer.
Shura consisted of Ameer of Pakistan Tablighi Jamaat Haji Abdul Wahhab, Maulana Zubair ul Hasan who is the son of Inaam ul Hasan, and Maulana Saad Kandhalvi son of Maulana Yusuf Kandhalvi, the second Ameer of the group. Since the passing away of Maulana Zubair ul Hasan in 2014, Maualna Saad has become the Ameer.
Son of Maulana Zubair ul Hasan, Maulana Zuhairul Hasan has laid a claim to the leadership, his followers have asked Saad to reconstitute the Shura which was rejected by Maulana Saad.
The first phase of the Bishwa Ijtema ends tomorrow while the second phase of Ijtema will be held from January 19 to 21. Bishwa Ijtema is the second largest congregation of the Muslim community after the holy Haj.
