Rafiq Hatture dies, Solapur Congress loses its strong leader

Solapur: Rafiq Babumiya Hatture, Indian National Congress senior corporator in Solapur Municipal Corporation (SMC) passed away on Monday after suffering a cardiac arrest.

He was admitted to Yashodhra hospital for poor cardiac function in Solapur. He lost his life battle during treatment around late night on Tuesday. He was 58.


Mr. Hatture had a long political career and since 1997 won 5 Municipal elections consecutively with record margin from Badsha Peth, Begum Peth and other Muslim areas. He was SMC Standing Committee Chairman in 2007. He was fondly called by his supporters as Member Saab.

Expressing her condolences, Solapur central MLA Praniti Shinde said that Rafiq Hatture was a very senior corporator and a loyal Congress party leader. He was a leader of common man as huge turnout in his funeral shows his popularity among the masses. He was very close to me and my father Susheel Kumar Shinde, legislature added further.

Thousands of people from all sections and walk of life attended his funeral irrespective of their religion.

Mr Hatture, who is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters, was buried at Modikhana Muslim cemetery with a large number of prominent political figures from the city in attendance.


He was actively involved in social and religious works. A party member Yaqoob Mangalgiri told TheShahab.com that Member Saab always used to entertain everybody; he never restricted himself just to his ward people. Mangalgiri added that his contributions towards mosques were commendable; he always extended all his help to complete legal issues of mosques and solved many drinking water related problems.

A social worker and a Head Master Asif Iqbal said, “Solapur lost a strong corporator who used to get the job done on priority and it is a big loss for the people of Solapur”.
