Solapur (Maharashtra): In a surprise move, Aejaz Shaikh, a young teacher contesting Solapur University Senate elections under registered graduates open category has marked his win. He claims to be the first Muslim elected in Solapur University under graduate category.
Solapur University senate election was held on 25 September. As per University’s record there are 9084 registered graduates who were allowed to cast their vote to elect 10 senates.
Solapur got its own university in 2004, earlier it was affiliated to Shivaji university, Kolhapur.
The Senate is the statutory apex body and supreme policy maker. It is principal authority for all financial estimates and budgetary appropriations and for providing social feedback to the University on current and future academic programs.
Total 16 candidates were contesting for 5 open seats under registered graduates’ category. Solapur University Teachers Association (SUTA) panel bagged 3 seats and Vidyapeeth Vikas Manch (supported by ABVP) secured 2 seats.
SUTA panel candidates Aejaz Shaikh, Rajendra Gaikwad and Sachin Gaikwad obtained 568, 627 and 542 votes respectively.
Vidyapeeth Vikas Manch candidates Ashwani Chavan and Shekhar Salunke obtained 781 and 740 votes respectively.
The university recorded 47.86% voting for registered graduates’ category and it took three days to count the votes for all categories.
While talking to theShahab.com, Aejaz Shaikh said, “Graduates from all sections of the society have extended their support for this win and new responsibility of senate will enable him to work for the betterment of the society in education field”.
He urged the community leaders to come forward for building the Science College as Solapur does not have Muslim community’s B.Sc. College. He being a senator will put it before University Vice Chancellor so that university will help in obtaining UGC permission for the same, Aejaz added further.
A city based primary school head master Aasif Iqbal said, “It is very proud and welcoming move, more people from minority communities should come forward and make their presence felt. People should be made more aware about such elections including Co-operative elections which plays very important role in society”.
