Suicide attack on Masjid-e-Haram foiled: Saudi Interior Ministry

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Security forces on Friday have foiled a terror attack on Masjid-e-Haram, holy mosque in Mecca. Saudi Interior Ministry in a statement said that, as the holy month Ramadan is near to an end, bombers have planned the attack on worshipers and the Grand mosque.

Ministry further said that security measures have been tightened up and raids have been conducted in Jeddah province and two areas of Mecca. The first was in the neighborhood of Asilah, and the second in Ajyad Al-Masafi, located near the Masjid-e-Haram.

The suicide bomber blew himself when security forces surrounded him and a three story building collapsed. He got killed and 6 foreign nationals and 5 security force members got wounded.

Five militants got arrested after the operation including a woman, the security spokesperson said.

The Interior Ministry confirms that the terrorist network intended to violate the security of the Grand Mosque, their plan was thwarted and violated.

No name of the involved group in the attack is taken by the Ministry. The kingdom is battling terror insurgencies by Al-Qaida and in recent years from local outfit of ISIS.

This attack came at a time when King Salman appointed new successor, a drastic shift in change in a ultraconservative country. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries have cut diplomatic ties with neighboring Qatar and are trying to isolate the energy-rich small country over its alleged support of militants and ties to Iran.
